THE DRESSMAKER (film) was a strange but stellar showcase of lush gowns and creeping foreboding

Cast: Kate Winslet; Hugo Heaving; Judy Davis; Liam Hemsworth.
Content Rating: PG 13.
Director: Jocelyn Moorhouse.
Year: 2015.
Source: Rented.

Synopsis:
A glamorous woman returns to her small town in rural Australia. With her sewing machine and haute couture style, she transforms the women and exacts sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.

The Dressmaker is a dark comedy drama and undeniably a sinfully guilty pleasure. Girls swirl and tumble in gorgeous gowns around a dry, Australian landscape, and the guys slick around town like sheriffs in a Western unless you're Liam Hemsworth, in which case you also take your shirt off and smile gorgeously.

Kate Winslet very rarely disappoints, and in this film Tilly's character suits her perfectly. She gives a sexy, capable, tortured portrayal of a betrayed woman bent on revenge, and does it brilliantly. Judy Davis is delightful comic relief, and her one-liners are spot- on. Her chemistry with Winslet is also strong, and the film benefits well from two excellent actresses who effortlessly carry it. Liam Hemsworth is admittedly eye-candy  probably for fans of The Hunger Games  but his performance is still good and solid; his acting skills are not exactly what I would call brilliant, but he fits his character well and gives what's expected of him.

The story is slightly muddled  and the conflict rather weak  but the cinematography is brilliant and visually the movie is gorgeous. Beautiful, brightly coloured dresses light up the rustic Australian town, and the cinematography captures the mood perfectly. It's an artistic, emotional, unique story with Winslet strutting in gorgeous dresses and giving a stellar performance. A good film  although the actual story has many flaws  and carried by brilliant cinematography, awesome visuals, and good acting.

I give it: 3 flowers!
